Varia

Varia gathers the photographs I take outside my artistic projects and commissions. It is a selection made from the mass of film and digital pictures I have taken since the early 2000s. The selection is not settled — there are still many images waiting to be found in contact sheets and on hard drives. It is also a body of work that keeps evolving, since I take photographs very often, like practicing scales, to keep my hand, my reflexes and my eye in shape.

The photographs are taken on walks, say, or on vacation, or just like that, on no particular occasion — on ordinary days, as they say, which are not so ordinary once you see them for what they are: unique and irreversible, photography being an attempt to hold on to something of their flavor through light and appearances.

It is a chance to play with photography, to keep the memory of a friend by taking their portrait, to catch fleeting light on a body, on a beloved landscape. The order of presentation does not follow chronology. The juxtaposition of images makes the montage.

The photographs show things and people quite plainly; they are dated, captioned, they document — but their succession is also a fiction: a story is being told.

I don’t show the most intimate moments of my life on the web. I keep those photographs for a book, a more physical, more private space, far better suited to images of intimacy.

This gallery presents a selection from the series.
