Maison Grausse — R. Schweitzer

Maison Grausse (1974)
Roland Schweitzer
Vézac

The Grausse House was built in 1974 for a couple who were friends of Roland Schweitzer, so they could stay there during their vacations in the heart of the Dordogne.

Located on a high point in the commune of Vézac, it is surrounded by preserved woodland and oriented to widely embrace the landscape.

Like the Grausse couple, Schweitzer is particularly fond of the Périgord Noir, which he knows well, to the point of referencing in his project local and traditional building forms, techniques, and materials. Imbued with modern culture, he adopts flat roofs and large glazed openings, despite them being foreign to the regional tradition.

Through his attention to the site, he shows that modern design and site-specific architecture are not incompatible.

Commission by the French Ministry of Culture (2024) as part of the ‘Remarkable Contemporary Architecture’ label.
